Answer: Olecranon bursitis/ blood accumulation.

How to distinguish from elbow joint effusion?

  • Location: Bursa located over olecranon process.  Elbow joint effusion more proximal
  • Bursal fluid is superficial whereas joint effusion is deeper and lifts fat pad.

Differential diagnosis for bursal fluid accumulation:

  • Septic bursitis
  • Gout
  • Pseudogout
  • Hematoma
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Synovial hypertrophy vs. synovial proliferation
